Future of Albion Dry Dock unveiled to key local stakeholders
At the grand opening of the Albion Dry Dock on Tuesday 5 March 2019, the SS Great Britain Trust and Directors of the Albion Dock Company welcomed local figures to tour the working dockyard and hear about plans for the site.
The event marked a significant moment for Bristol as the SS Great Britain Trust reopened the historic Dry Dock in partnership with Bristol City Council.
Matthew Tanner, Chief Executive of the SS Great Britain Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome guests here today to showcase the future of ship building and repair in the Dry Dock. This is an important first step in re-establishing the Dry Dock as a vibrant and economically active part of the harbour next to the SS Great Britain.”
He added: “The re-opening of the Albion Dry Dock will also provide a significant boost for the local economy and create new jobs and opportunities.”
Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: “Bristol’s harbour is a huge asset for the city, central to our maritime heritage and a key tourist attraction with a strong leisure offer. I also want it to be a vibrant working harbour, and thanks to the reopening of Albion Dry Dock, it now has three active shipyards and an even stronger future.”
The Albion Dock Company is run by experienced maritime manufacturer Martin Childs along with Paul and Steve Beacham who also run Sharpness Shipyard and Dry Dock at the head of the Bristol Channel.
